They're actually one of the more independent breeds. I've found that my British Shorthair is perfectly content to do his own thing for hours-napping in a sunbeam or watching birds out the window-as long as he knows I'm around somewhere. On the one hand, they do enjoy a bit of affection on their own terms, but on the other hand, they won't pester you for it constantly like some other cats might. As long as you provide a stimulating environment with toys and a cozy spot, they're generally pretty self-sufficient.

Absolutely. A British Shorthair is basically the low-maintenance business partner you want in a cat - they handle their own schedule and don't demand constant oversight. I've had mine for years, and he's happiest when I'm working in my home office; he'll nap nearby or entertain himself, then come over for a quick chin scratch when it's efficient for him. They're built for independence, so you get more done without feeling guilty about neglecting them.
