Looking at it from a behavioral perspective, yes, an Abyssinian can absolutely learn to stay off counters, but it requires understanding why they jump up in the first place. These cats are incredibly active and curious - they jump because counters offer height, food smells, or a view of what you're doing. Consistent redirection to acceptable high spaces, like cat trees near the kitchen, combined with making counters unrewarding (no food left out, double-sided tape on edges) works better than punishment. I've found that pairing a firm "no" with immediately placing them on a designated perch, then rewarding them there, builds a reliable habit over a few weeks.

Putting a stop to counter surfing is about making it inconvenient for *me*, not just the cat. I taught mine by placing double-sided tape on the edges-she hated the sticky feel, and I didn't have to constantly yell or chase her. If she jumps up, I just clap my hands once and she hops down, so I get my kitchen space back without her sulking.

Yes, it's completely doable, but you need to be more creative than stubborn with this breed. I set up a designated "observation perch" on top of the fridge with a soft mat and a toy, so my Abyssinian had a legal high spot to supervise me while I cooked. Every time she went for the counter, I gently lifted her to her perch and gave her a treat there. She caught on in about two weeks because it satisfied her need to be up high without the negative feedback. Consistency with that alternative space worked way better than any scolding ever did.

Trained mine by making the counter itself boring-no food left out, wiped down smells, and I’d put a cookie sheet on the edge so when she jumped up, it clattered and scared her off. Took maybe a week, but she decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. Key is consistency and giving her a tall cat tower nearby to watch me instead.
