They can be social, but don't expect a lapdog. Maine Coons tend to follow you around and supervise your activities rather than demanding constant cuddles. They're often affectionate on their own terms, which means they'll sit nearby and tolerate petting for a while, but won't hesitate to walk away when bored.

It's completely understandable to wonder how a big cat like that fits into a family dynamic. They really do thrive on being part of the household action, often following you from room to room just to see what you're up to. While they might not be lap cats in the traditional sense, many are wonderfully social and will greet you at the door or plop down nearby while you watch TV.

I lean towards saying yes, but with a pretty big caveat about the *type* of social they are. From what I've seen, they bond deeply with their family and want to be in the same room, often following you around the house like a quiet shadow. On the one hand, they'll sit on the back of the couch while you read or sleep at the foot of the bed, so they're present and involved. On the other hand, they're not usually the type to demand constant petting or sit in your lap for hours - they prefer to be near you rather than on you, which can feel a bit more independent than some people expect from a social cat.
