Fleece tends to be a favorite over cotton for these cats since it holds warmth better and feels softer against their fur. I’ve noticed my own American Shorthair curls up on a microfleece throw way more often than on a smooth cotton blanket-it’s like the texture mimics a cozy nest.

Fleece is hands down the best, they just can't resist that soft warmth. My old barn cat would always pick a fleece throw over anything else, especially when it's chilly out.

If you pick a rough or slick material like nylon, your cat might never even look at that blanket and instead choose the floor or a cardboard box. I've seen it happen, and it's frustrating watching a perfectly good blanket go untouched. But here's the thing - a thick, plush faux fur is usually a huge hit. My American Shorthair will knead on it for ten minutes straight before settling down, it's like the long fibers remind them of being near their mom.

You're totally right that they're picky about texture. From my experience, a soft cotton fleece blend is what my American Shorthair gravitates toward most-it's breathable enough for warmer days but still cozy, and she'll burrow into it rather than just lay on top like she does with synthetics.
