A sisal rope post, rough and textured like the bark of an old oak tree, will win their heart every time-it’s a tactile symphony for their paws, a dance of resistance and release. Cardboard, with its soft, crinkly surrender, is a close second, like a whispered secret they can’t help but unravel.

From what I’ve seen with my own cat, those vertical sisal-wrapped posts are the real deal-they’ll shred them without a second thought, while cardboard flat scratchers get ignored after a week. I’d need to see some controlled testing to believe any breed has a universal preference, but anecdotal evidence points to rough textures over soft ones.

Flat cardboard is what mine always goes for first, it’s cheap and gets shredded fast, so I just replace it when it falls apart. The sisal posts just sit there collecting dust, so I’d say go with whatever they actually claw at, not what’s trendy.
