Go for a sturdy, wide perch with a plush surface - American Shorthairs are muscular and medium-sized, so they need enough room to stretch out without tipping over. Look for one that attaches securely to the window frame with strong suction cups or brackets, since these cats love to leap up and lounge for hours watching birds.

Get one with a wide, flat platform and a decent weight limit-American Shorthairs are solid and like to sprawl, so flimsy hammocks won't cut it for my convenience. I'd pick a perch with a removable cover, makes cleaning fur off it way easier when I can't be bothered to vacuum.

Pick one with a reinforced metal frame and extra-wide cushioning-American Shorthairs have a stocky build and can knock over cheap plastic perches when they jump down. A model with a non-slip surface works best since they tend to shift around while bird-watching.
