The composer has won eight Oscars, 11 Grammys, one Tony and now an Emmy award over the course of his career.

Renowned Disney and Broadway composer Alan Menken has become only the 16th person in history to reach the status of “EGOT” – after winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

Menken, who is best known for writing the music for Disney films such as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, sealed his name in the history books after being awarded a Daytime Emmy on Sunday.

The 71-year-old was honoured in the best original song in a children’s, young adult or animated programme category for a song he wrote for Disney Channel’s Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

In a message to his Twitter followers after his win, Menken said: “Really proud of everyone who contributed to the TANGLED series.

“As far as me finally reaching my official EGOT status (Howard Ashman and I did actually get an honorary Emmy back in the ’80s), what can I say? I’m honoured, thrilled and humbled.”

Menken joins names such as Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend and Andrew Lloyd Webber on the elusive list of people who have won all four major awards in US entertainment.

During his career, Menken has won eight Oscars and 11 Grammy awards for songs written for Aladdin, Beauty And The Beast, Pocahontas and The Little Mermaid, and picked up a Tony Award, which honours musical theatre in the US, for his music in Newsies.
