Keep them engaged with a wide, shallow water fountain placed on a towel or in a low-sided tray. Both breeds love running water, but a fountain with a gentle stream or a waterfall attachment reduces the splashing compared to an open bowl. I've seen my Turkish Van settle for just dipping a paw when the water flows slowly, while my Angora prefers to drink directly from the stream. The key is controlling the flow rate and providing a contained splash zone.

I’ve found success using a ceramic, tilted water dish with a narrow rim - it forces them to drink from the side rather than pawing. My Turkish Van loves to pat the surface, but the angled edge keeps her paws dry, and my Angora stays focused on the stream without batting it. Place it on a mat with raised edges to catch any stray drops.

Start by training them with a shallow, weighted bowl that's too heavy to tip, placed inside a plastic boot tray. My Turkish Van learned to drink without pawing after I added a few smooth river stones to the water - it broke the surface tension and discouraged batting. The Angora watched and copied within a week, so now we have a dry floor and happy cats.

I set up two separate shallow fountains on opposite sides of the kitchen and placed rubber mats under each. My Turkish Van likes to dip a paw and lick it, while the Angora prefers to drink from the stream directly. By keeping them at a distance and using mats, the mess stays contained and they still get their water play without me having to mop.
