Can a Turkish Van's water-loving reputation translate into actual bath tolerance, or just sink supervision?

The sink supervision is real, but the bath tolerance depends entirely on how you introduce the water. Turkish Vans don't automatically love being submerged - they prefer controlled interaction like pawing at dripping faucets or splashing in shallow sinks. To get actual bath tolerance, you need to start with positive reinforcement around the sink first, letting them explore dry, then with a tiny trickle of water. Gradually increase the depth over multiple sessions, never forcing them. I've seen mine go from supervising the sink to sitting in a few inches of water, but only because I built it up slowly over weeks.

My own Turkish Van, Mocha, will follow me into the bathroom and sit on the edge of the tub while I shower, but she absolutely freaks out if I try to put her in the water. She prefers to supervise from a dry perch, occasionally sticking a paw in to test the temperature. It's more about curiosity than full-on bath enjoyment.

From my experience with two Turkish Vans, I've learned it's not about full baths at all - it's about control. One of mine, Jasper, will happily sit in an empty sink while I run the faucet over his paws, but the moment I try to lower him into a tub, he's a clawed escape artist. They seem to need to initiate the water contact themselves, so sink supervision is really the gateway. If you want bath tolerance, you'd need to let them walk into a shallow tub on their own terms, but even then, it's rare they'll stay for more than a minute.

I've owned three Turkish Vans over the years, and only one ever tolerated a full bath. The trick was never forcing it - I'd leave a few inches of lukewarm water in the tub and let him wander in on his own terms. He'd paddle around for a minute or two, then hop out and shake off like a dog. The other two? They'd scream bloody murder if I even turned on the shower while they were in the same room. Sink supervision is definitely the norm, but a few individuals genuinely enjoy a shallow dip if they're calling the shots.

Sink supervision is the rule, not the exception. My Van, Pearl, will dive headfirst into a filled bathtub if I'm already in it, paddling around like a duck. But put her in an empty tub and turn the tap on? She bolts. The difference is choice-she needs to initiate the immersion, not be placed there. Bath tolerance is possible, but only if you let them control the depth and timing. Start with a shallow basin, not a full tub.
