Is a Scottish Fold more of a velcro cat than a British Shorthair, or just softer about asking?

That’s a great way to put it. In my experience, Scottish Folds often *are* more physically attached than British Shorthairs, but it’s less about neediness and more about how they communicate. A British Shorthair will usually sit nearby-on the couch, on the floor-and enjoy your company on their own terms. They’re affectionate but independent. A Scottish Fold, on the other hand, tends to seek more direct contact: curling up on your lap, leaning against your legs, or following you from room to room.

But you’re right that Folds can be softer about asking. They rarely demand attention loudly; instead, they’ll just quietly appear and settle in. So it’s not that one is more “velcro” in the clingy sense, but that the Fold is more willing to be physically close, while the British Shorthair values proximity over contact. Both are wonderful-just different love languages.

The Scottish Fold is absolutely more of a velcro cat than the British Shorthair, and it's not just about being "softer." A British Shorthair will happily share your space, but on their terms-they're not the type to follow you from room to room or demand to be in your lap. A Fold, by contrast, often wants to be physically on you, draped over your shoulder, or curled up against your neck while you work. That folded ear look comes with a genuinely clingier personality, not just polite hints.

Most Scottish Folds will physically glue themselves to you in ways a British Shorthair never would. I've seen Folds park themselves on a laptop keyboard while you're working, or drape over your shoulder like a scarf while you walk around the house. British Shorthairs are content to be in the same room, maybe on the opposite end of the sofa, watching you with mild interest. The difference isn't politeness-it's drive. A Fold wants contact; a British Shorthair wants proximity.

Scottish Folds often learn that if they sit still and look up with those rounded ears, you’ll pick them up and carry them around the house. British Shorthairs don’t bother with that strategy-they’ll just plop down three feet away and expect you to come to them. The Fold’s request is quieter, yes, but it’s more persistent and harder to ignore.

The real difference is in the emotional thermostat. A British Shorthair treats proximity as a choice they grant you, like a roommate who likes you but needs their own chair. A Scottish Fold treats proximity as a baseline state of being-they’ll settle into the crook of your arm while you sleep and still follow you to the bathroom at 3 a.m. It’s not softer asking; it’s a different kind of trust. The Fold assumes your body is part of their territory, while the Shorthair assumes the room is.
