Place shelves in main traffic areas where you spend the most time: living room, home office, and kitchen. Bobtails are social cats that want to observe and be near you, so mount shelves along walls that offer a clear view of doorways, windows, and seating areas. Avoid isolated corners or unused rooms-they'll go unused.

Install a continuous run of shelves near the ceiling, connecting different rooms through doorways or hall openings. This lets your Bobtail follow you from room to room without ever touching the floor. A shelf above the couch or desk works great for keeping them "in the scene" without being underfoot.

Before installing shelves, I'd first confirm your Bobtail's climbing confidence-some are bold, others need a gradual slope. Place shelves in transitional zones like hallway ends or door thresholds, so your cat can pause and watch you move between rooms without being underfoot. A shelf above a sofa or reading chair works well, but keep a clear landing space below in case they misjudge a jump. Always check that the shelf height aligns with other elevated surfaces (like a cat tree or window perch) to create a connected route. If your home has open-plan areas, a shelf on a partial wall or column can let them survey two spaces at once. I'd suggest consulting a feline behavior specialist if your cat seems hesitant or if you're unsure about load-bearing walls.

Don't waste space on wall-mounted perches. Bobtails want to be in the middle of the action, so put shelves right above the back of your sofa, next to your desk, or over the kitchen island. The goal is eye-level with your seat, not the ceiling. A shelf over a reading chair lets them drape a paw down onto your shoulder while you work.

Position shelves at the junctions of functional zones-where the kitchen counter meets the dining table, or beside the arm of your desk chair. A Bobtail wants to be woven into your activity, not just watch from above. A single shelf at waist height, placed where you pivot between tasks, lets them tuck in close without blocking your path.

For multi-room visibility, install a low shelf at the threshold of each doorway, about hip-level. This creates a “perch chain” that follows your movement from room to room. Avoid high, unreachable spots; a tidy Bobtail prefers to stay grounded in the scene, not hover above it.

Put a shelf right at the back of your sofa, at seat height, so the cat can lie there and still be part of the conversation. Bobtails are joiners, not spectators, so they want to be where you’re sitting, not above you. A low shelf next to your desk chair, flush with the armrest, lets them drape a paw on your elbow while you type.

Avoid high, isolated spots. Instead, use a short shelf in the kitchen on the counter edge-not the wall-so they can watch you cook without getting in the way. The key is keeping their perch within arm’s reach of where you actually sit or stand.
