Go with an entry height no more than 4-5 inches off the ground. Their sturdy, rounded build makes higher steps a struggle, and I've seen how they prefer a low lip they can just waddle over without any fuss. It's a small adjustment that keeps their joints happy and their bathroom trips stress-free, which is a win for everyone.

I'd keep the entry at 3 to 4 inches max. Anything taller and my Exotic Shorthair struggled to hoist her fluffy, low-to-the-ground body over the rim, often scraping her belly or just giving up. A lower step means she can step in without that awkward scramble, and it prevents litter from getting kicked out as much since she doesn't have to jump.

Measure the height from the floor to just under your cat's belly while she stands normally. For my own Exotic Shorthair, that was about 3 inches, so I chose a box with a 2.5-inch entry to give a slight buffer. Any taller and she'd hesitate or bump her underside, which made her avoid the box entirely. A low, gradual step-in also reduces the risk of her soft, round body getting stuck or tipping the box over when she shifts her weight.

Keep it under 4 inches if you want your little potato to actually use the thing. I learned the hard way with my chunky Exotic that anything taller just turns into a belly-scraping obstacle course. They're basically living beanbags, so a low step-in saves them the drama and saves you the cleanup when they miss.

I go with 3 inches. My Exotic Shorthair, Muffin, has that dense, round build and anything taller makes her rock back and forth trying to balance. She needs a low edge she can just step over without that awkward lift, otherwise she ends up peeing over the side.
