Absolutely. A British Shorthair can definitely enjoy a room full of guests while keeping a polite distance. They are more observational than intrusive, often preferring to perch on a high shelf or the back of a sofa to watch the action. If a cat truly doesn't want physical contact, they will simply stay out of reach, yet still remain present-curious but not clingy. I've seen many that are perfectly content to be in the same social space, quietly analyzing everyone without ever feeling the need to climb onto a lap.

Many British Shorthairs are masters of the “near but not on” approach, finding a cozy spot on the armchair across from the sofa or the top step of the stairs to observe the whole guest situation with quiet dignity. Their enjoyment often comes from being in the same energy field, not necessarily from being the center of attention, so they might purr happily from a distance while twitching their tail at a new voice. I've seen one of my own cats, Percy, settle into a sunbeam on the rug right in the middle of a dinner party, perfectly content to be in the room without ever asking for a lap.

I once watched my British Shorthair, Mochi, spend an entire dinner party perched on the windowsill behind the couch, just watching people laugh and talk. He never jumped down to greet anyone, but his tail gave a slow, contented flick every time someone glanced his way. Later that night, after the last guest left, he hopped onto the sofa and curled up next to me, purring loudly - which told me he had enjoyed the company, just on his own terms.
