Not securing the carrier properly is a huge one - a loose carrier that slides around or tips over can terrify a cat. Also, forgetting to bring familiar items like their blanket or a favorite toy can make them feel unsafe in a new space. Have you ever traveled with a cat, and if so, what did you bring to keep them calm?

Leaving the carrier out only a few minutes before you leave is a common mistake - cats need time to get used to it as part of their territory, not a sudden trap. I've seen too many folks just toss the carrier on the floor and shove the cat inside, then wonder why the poor thing is panicking the whole ride. Give them a few days with the carrier open and a cozy bed inside, and it makes a world of difference.

Forgetting to secure the carrier properly is worse than a loose carrier sliding around - it’s like comparing a bumpy road to a rollercoaster. I’ve seen people just set it on the seat, then the cat gets tossed every turn, which makes them associate travel with chaos.

Playing music or having the radio on too loud during the drive is a surefire way to make a cat think you’re chauffeuring them to a rock concert they didn’t sign up for. I once cranked up my playlist on a trip with my cat, and she spent the whole time giving me the stink eye from her carrier like I’d personally offended her ancestors. Keep it quiet or use calming cat tunes instead.

Skipping test drives around the block before a longer trip is a rookie error I see all the time. I once assumed my cat would just nap through a 30-minute drive, but she ended up yowling and panting because she’d never even been in a moving car before. Short practice rides help them learn that travel isn’t some terrifying new dimension.
