I’d go with the window perch if you want your American Shorthair to be truly entertained. These cats are natural-born observers-they’ll spend hours watching birds, cars, and neighbors, and a perch lets them lounge in the sun while keeping an eye on their territory. A tall tree is great for climbing and scratching, but unless it’s right by a window, it’s more of a nap spot than a command center for their daily bird-watching shift. I’ve found my own American Shorthair ignores the tree unless there’s a crinkly toy stuck in it, but she lives on her window hammock from dawn till dusk.

Tall trees are better if your cat has energy to burn and needs a good stretch for those claws. American Shorthairs are sturdy little athletes that love to climb and scratch, so a tall tree gives them a solid workout and a high vantage point for surveying the room. Window perches are fine for lazy sunbathing, but they don't offer the same physical outlet that keeps a muscular cat like this from getting bored and destructive.

Neither one will work unless you match it to your cat's actual personality - I've seen American Shorthairs who are total acrobats and others who are professional loafers. For a breed that's both sturdy and playful, I'd actually recommend getting both if you can swing it, but if you're picking just one, think about whether your cat prefers to be up high watching the whole room or glued to a sunny window birdwatching for hours. My buddy's American Shorthair ignored the fancy tree completely until they moved it next to the window, and suddenly it became the best of both worlds.

Considering your American Shorthair's natural curiosity and love for both climbing and observing, you might want to think about their daily mood. I've found that a tall tree offers them a fantastic full-body workout and a private hideaway, which is perfect for their playful bursts of energy. On the other hand, a window perch gives them front-row access to the world outside, which can be endlessly stimulating for their hunting instincts. It really depends on whether your kitty is more of an active explorer or a quiet spectator-maybe start with one and see which spot they claim first.
