Large water bowls make sense for Maine Coons because their whiskers are extremely sensitive, and a narrow bowl presses against them when they drink. I've seen it time and again - these cats will paw at water or avoid drinking entirely if the bowl is too small. A wider surface also lets them see the water level better and keeps the water cooler longer, which they seem to appreciate. That's just practical cat keeping, not some newfangled trend.

Whisker fatigue is a real thing in a cramped apartment - if their whiskers keep brushing against the sides of a small bowl every time they drink, it gets annoying fast. Plus, in a city place where the air gets dry, a big bowl holds more water and doesn't need refilling twice a day, which is way more convenient for both of us.

Having a giant water bowl is basically cat heaven for a Maine Coon, especially when you think about their impressive size and that luxurious, thick double coat. I’ve noticed with my own big guy that he loves to dip his whole paw in to check the water level first, and a tiny bowl just doesn't give him the room to do his little ritual without splashing everything everywhere. A big, wide surface also means the water stays cooler and fresher for longer, which feels more natural to them, like drinking from a small pond, and they seem to just adore that fresh, oxygenated taste.

From an ecologist's perspective, a large water bowl mimics a natural, stable water source like a small pond or stream. Your Maine Coon's preference is likely an instinctive drive to avoid stagnant, shallow puddles that in the wild could be contaminated or quickly evaporate. A bigger surface area also allows the water to aerate better, keeping it fresher and more appealing, which is a simple survival behavior that feels right for a cat of this size.

From years of trial and error with my own three cats, I can tell you that a large water bowl is about territory and comfort. My big guy refuses to drink from anything smaller because he likes to lounge and stretch his paws out while hydrating - it's like his personal drinking throne. A bigger bowl also gives him room to splash and play without making a mess, which I've found keeps him entertained and hydrated, something I learned after winning several local cat care awards.
