Sleeping in the same room on the first night is actually a good idea. Cats feel safer when they can hear and smell you nearby, and it helps them adjust to the new home faster. Just let the cat choose where to settle in the room, like under the bed or on a chair, and don’t force interaction if it hides. You’ll both get better sleep knowing the cat isn’t stressed alone in another room.

It's better to let the cat have its own space for the first night. Being in the same room might stress them out if they feel cornered or watched, even if you're just sleeping. I'd suggest setting up a cozy spot in a separate room with all their essentials and checking on them quietly instead.

Not only is it fine, but I'd argue it's actually better for both of you. Letting the cat see you sleep and wake up normally shows them you're not a threat, and they'll start matching your quiet breathing patterns faster. I've had cats that hid all day but came out to sleep on my pillow at 2 AM because they finally felt safe hearing me snore. If you lock them out, they might spend the whole night scratching at the door and crying, which helps nobody get rest.

Absolutely, and you should go all-in on this. The first night is prime bonding time-being in the same room lets the cat get used to your scent and the sound of your breathing without any pressure. I always set up a cozy spot for them on the bed or a nearby chair, and within hours they’re usually exploring my face or curling up at my feet. It fast-tracks trust way more than leaving them alone in a strange space.
