Start by setting up one quiet room in the new place with their familiar bed, litter box, and food bowls before they even arrive-cats are territory-driven, and a known scent zone eases the shock of a new ecosystem. Keep them confined there for a few days, letting them explore the rest of the house gradually, because sudden exposure to a whole new environment can overload their natural cautious instincts.

Keep their routine exactly the same during the packing chaos-feed them at the same times and keep their litter box in the same spot until moving day. On moving day itself, put them in a closed room with a favorite blanket and a toy, away from all the noise and strangers, then move them last in a carrier lined with that same blanket so they have a familiar scent anchor.

Packing up the house stresses me out too, so I always keep their favorite hiding spot accessible until the last minute-like a cardboard box they love or a spot behind the couch. Once we’re in the new place, I set up their food and water bowls in a cozy corner with a soft blanket first, then let them explore at their own pace from that safe zone, never forcing them out of a carrier or under a bed.

Creating a little sanctuary in the new space before the chaos begins makes all the difference - I like to set up a single room with their familiar blanket and a few toys, letting them discover it like a hidden treasure in a gallery. Moving boxes and unfamiliar smells feel like a messy canvas, so I sprinkle a bit of their used litter or rub a cloth on their favorite spots to paint a scent map that whispers 'home' through the upheaval.
