I’ve only had my Scottish Fold for about a year, so I’m still figuring things out myself. What’s worked for me is letting him choose his own safe spot when guests come over, like a cozy bed or a high shelf, and I never force him to interact. I also ask visitors to ignore him completely at first, no staring or reaching out, until he decides to come sniff them on his own terms. I’m not sure if that’s the perfect approach, but it’s helped him stay calm so far.

Build a predictable routine before guests arrive - I set up a high perch or a covered cat cave in a quiet room 15 minutes before anyone walks in. My Scottish Fold knows that spot means "safe zone," and I reward him with a treat each time he settles there. I also ask visitors to toss a few treats near him without eye contact, letting him approach on his own terms. Consistency in this warm-up drill makes him feel in control, and over time he starts greeting people like a teammate.

Start by letting your Scottish Fold have a quiet space away from the action, like a bedroom with his favorite blanket and a toy, and never force him to greet anyone. I always tell guests to sit still and speak softly, letting my Fold come sniff them when he’s ready, which usually happens after a few minutes of calm ignoring. This way he feels in control, and I’ve noticed he’s much more curious than scared when he knows he can retreat anytime.

I keep a stash of high-value treats like freeze-dried chicken ready before anyone knocks, and I give my Fold a tiny piece every time a visitor speaks or moves, so he starts linking guests with good things. It melts my heart when he eventually pads over to investigate, even if it takes half an hour - patience is everything, and I never pressure him to stay if he wants to retreat under the couch.
