Chase toys with erratic movement work best-think feather wands or motorized mice that dart unpredictably. A laser pointer can be fun, but always end with a physical toy they can catch to avoid frustration.

Fetching small crumpled paper balls or lightweight toy springs down a hallway is perfect, my Abby goes nuts for that. I also set up a simple cat wheel in the living room, and he sprints on it like a tiny racehorse-just make sure it’s sturdy, or they’ll knock it over.

Setting up a simple obstacle course with cardboard boxes and tunnels where I can toss a toy through forces him to use that speed in bursts, which satisfies his need for quick dashes without requiring constant supervision. A dangling toy on a string that I swing in rapid circles also gets him leaping and sprinting in place, burning off that restless energy in a controlled way.

I have one of these little speed demons myself, and I’ve found that a simple DIY agility course works wonders. On the one hand, they love the challenge of weaving through tunnels or leaping over low hurdles made from cardboard boxes, but on the other hand, you have to keep the setup unpredictable or they’ll get bored fast. I’ll sometimes use a dangling toy on a stick to lure him through the course at full tilt, and that really satisfies his need for a fast, structured sprint without him tearing up the furniture.
