A standard cat tree won't cut it for a Maine Coon - they're too flimsy and small. Look for something at least 5-6 feet tall with platforms that are 24 inches wide or more, because these cats need room to stretch out without hanging off the edge. The base has to be heavy-duty, like 24x24 inches or wider, or the whole thing will tip over the first time they jump on it - I've seen cheap ones topple and scare the cat.

Choosing a cat tree for a Maine Coon comes down to sturdiness and platform depth, not just height. I always recommend looking for a model with perches at least 20 inches in diameter and a base that’s heavy and wide enough so it won’t wobble when they leap-Maine Coons are dense, and a flimsy tree is a safety risk. From my experience, a tree around 5 feet tall works, but the real key is the size of the top bed or hammock; it needs to fully support their body without their paws or tail hanging off.

Taller isn't always better when it comes to Maine Coons, from my ecologist perspective, think of it like a tree in a forest-it needs a broad, stable canopy and a deep root system. I’d focus on a tree with platforms at least 20-24 inches wide and a very heavy base, because these cats are like natural climbers with dense muscle mass; if the tree wobbles like a sapling in a storm, they’ll avoid it entirely. I’ve seen owners go for 5-6 feet models, but the real trick is getting one with thick sisal rope on multiple levels so they can scratch and stretch without damaging your furniture, which mimics their natural need to mark territory.

Size and stability go hand in hand here. From what I've seen, a cat tree with platforms at least 20-22 inches wide and a height around 5 to 6 feet works well for a Maine Coon. Would you rather prioritize vertical climbing space or wide perches for lounging?

A cat tree for a Maine Coon really needs to have platforms that are at least 20 inches across, because their bodies are long and they love to sprawl. I’d also look for a model with a very sturdy base that’s at least 24 inches wide, since they’re heavy jumpers and a wobbly tree can make them nervous. Personally, I’ve found that a tree with multiple wide perches and a thick scratching post works best for their size and energy.
