Let me clarify what you mean by "prefer" - are you asking about sleeping, lounging, or just general hanging out? Because for Abyssinians, it's usually about all three. They're natural climbers with a strong instinct to survey their territory from above, so a tall cat tree or shelf feels safer and more strategic than a floor bed where they can't see what's coming. Plus, they get bored easily and high spots offer more visual stimulation - watching birds, people, or just the room's activity. Floor beds are fine for naps, but they'll always pick a perch for prime real estate.

Back in my day, cats knew a good thing when they saw it, and high spots meant safety. These Abyssinians are just following an old instinct to keep an eye on things from above, like a lookout in a tree, so no surprises creep up on them. Floor beds just feel too exposed for a breed that likes to be in charge of the whole room.

From my own cats, it's all about the vantage point and the warmth. Up high, they catch the sun or the heat rising from the room, plus they can watch every move I make without getting underfoot. Floor beds just feel like dead zones to them - no breeze, no view, and way too easy for a kid or a dog to barge in on their nap.
