Start by creating a safe zone-a quiet room with their bed, litter box, and toys-where your cat can retreat when guests arrive. Let them approach visitors entirely on their own terms, never forcing interactions, and ask guests to offer treats or gentle chin scratches from a seated position to build trust.

I keep a supply of high-value treats near the front door and ask guests to toss a few toward my cat from a distance, never reaching out. Gradually, over several visits, I move the treat closer to their hand, letting the cat decide the pace-this builds positive associations without pressure.

Before guests arrive, I let my cat explore the space where they’ll be sitting, leaving a worn t-shirt of mine nearby so he can scent-mark it as his own territory. During the visit, I keep his favorite feather wand toy handy and engage him in a short play session near the guests but at a distance, letting him associate their presence with fun rather than stress.

I’ve found that letting my cat observe from a high perch, like a cat tree or shelf, works wonders-Maine Coons love having a vantage point. I position the perch near the living room but not directly in the traffic flow, so he can watch guests from a safe distance. If he seems curious, I’ll casually sit near him and talk softly, letting him decide when to come down, which makes the whole thing feel like his choice, not a command.
