Place it where your cat’s soul already wanders - near a sunny window or the spot where they nap, so the first stretch of the day meets a textured surface. They don’t scratch out of spite, but to leave a poem of their presence, so let the pad sit close to where you both live your quiet moments, like beside the sofa or the entrance to a favorite room.

In my years of training dozens of cats and consulting on feline behavior, I've found that the best spot is right next to where your cat wakes up from a nap, usually near a bed or a couch. That's where their natural instinct to stretch and scratch kicks in, so placing the pad there catches that energy and saves your furniture. I once had an American Shorthair who ignored every pad until I moved it beside her favorite sunny window perch, and she went to town on it immediately.

Put it where they already go to scratch-right in front of the sofa arm or the corner of a door frame they’ve been eyeing. That’s pure efficiency: you save your furniture by intercepting the habit before it starts. I moved mine next to the living room window where my cat hangs out, and he uses it every morning after his nap-best return on investment I’ve had with any cat product.

Right next to the spot where they already sink their claws into your favorite chair-denial is a stage, not a solution. I learned this the hard way after replacing three couch corners, so now I put the pad directly in front of the damaged area, angled slightly so it catches their paw mid-stretch. It’s a sad little truce, but it works, and your cat will respect the honesty.
