Mine does it because it’s more fun for me to watch her struggle than to retrieve the toy myself-plus, it keeps her occupied while I binge-watch my shows. I’m not crawling under the couch for a crinkly mouse she’ll lose in five minutes; she’ll figure out how to paw it out or get bored and move on, which saves me the hassle.

It's totally normal behavior, honey - they're just following their natural hunting instincts. When your Abyssinian bats a toy under the couch, it mimics the way a mouse or bug would scurry into a hiding spot, which triggers their prey drive. I always make sure to supervise and check that the toys they're chasing aren't too small or have any loose parts that could become a choking hazard under there. If you're worried about losing toys or your cat getting stuck, try blocking off the gap with a rolled towel or a piece of cardboard so they can still play safely without diving into trouble.
