Covered boxes trap smells and make the cat feel trapped, which most cats hate. Exotic Shorthairs are laid-back and don't need privacy like that, so an open box lets them see around and feel safer. I've always used simple open pans with low sides, easy to scoop and clean, no fancy gadgets needed.

Open box is the way to go. Exotic Shorthairs have those flat faces and can get a bit stuffy in a covered box with less airflow, plus they're chill enough that they don't need the privacy-just a clean, easy-access spot they can hop in and out of without feeling cramped.

For a cat with that gorgeous flat face, I’d lean toward an open box every time-imagine how dreamy it is for them to have a clear view of their surroundings while doing their business, feeling the breeze and not worrying about bumping their nose on a lid. Covered boxes feel like a little cave, and while some cats adore that, I’ve always pictured my Exotic Shorthair wanting to lounge nearby and watch the world, not hide away in a stuffy corner. An open pan with a low front lets them hop in gracefully, and you can scoop without any drama-it’s all about keeping that peaceful vibe they bring to the room.
