Pedantically speaking, your question assumes a specific breed trait, but this behavior isn't exclusive to Exotic Shorthairs. Most cats, regardless of breed, have individual comfort zones with handling. An Exotic Shorthair that sits near you but squirms or leaves when picked up is simply expressing its personal boundary-it wants your proximity without the restriction of being held. That's normal cat behavior, rooted in their need for control over social interactions.

Totally normal and honestly, that's peak cat behavior for a studio apartment dweller like me. They want the companionship without the full-on commitment of being trapped in your arms while you're trying to scroll through your phone. It's like having a roommate who hangs out on the couch next to you but hates when you try to hug them - respecting that space keeps the peace in a small living situation.
